The Upland Handbook (Groups)
Before your holiday you will receive our unique Upland Handbook, with an introduction to the area and its history, geology, flora and fauna, to the town where you will be staying, as well as to your accommodation and hosts. Also included are some handy language tips and local greeting etiquette, and suggestions on how you might like to support responsible tourism.
In the Handbook you will find a summary of the three organised walks you are likely to experience and full details of the self-guided walks available on other days. As well as providing clear descriptions to ensure problem-free route-finding, for each walk the Handbook gives other details such as:
- availability of drinking water
- places to cool your feet in a stream
- attractive picnic spots
- points of cultural interest
- shade for hot days
A table tells you how much climbing and descending is involved, how long the walk is and what the terrain is like – including any short stretches of path that some might find vertiginous. Maps specific to each walk will be provided to accompany the route notes in the Handbook.
We have tried to include (given the limits of space!) everything else that you may want to know during your holiday: the best place to find a pot of honey, an interesting church, a toothbrush, a museum, a Pope’s favourite hermitage… but if anything seems to be missing, just ask your Upland Manager. We also welcome your suggestions for additional inclusions.
Last, but very far from least, the Handbook contains information about the best restaurants in town for you to enjoy on your free evenings, how to find them, and suggestions of local delicacies to try.
