Traditional Village Life
Upland Escapes are single-centre based, so you can really get to know the area during your stay – and only have to unpack once! We have sought out small, simple villages and hamlets, relatively undiscovered by tourism, where traditional upland ways of life are still in evidence. Awake to the crow of a cockerel, the tinkling of goat bells, the honk of the delivery van bringing the day’s freshly baked bread. Join the locals by the village fountain to put the world to rights or to learn the best time to plant tomatoes. Savour the local cheeses, honey, eggs, vegetables, and, if you are brave enough, a dram or two of walnut liqueur, orange wine, local rum or herb-infused schnapps!
We would like you to feel that you can experience your surroundings as an insider, and not just as an onlooker. With a base in a traditional upland village or hamlet we trust you will quickly feel at home and part of the local way of life, appreciating it and helping to preserve it, all at the same time. If you prefer, at some of our destinations you can stay in the charming local towns which support these nearby villages, but which offer a larger number of small family-run shops, bars and restaurants within walking distance of your accommodation.

Accommodation
We have searched high and low to track down the unlikely combination of authentic upland villages and hamlets, relatively untouched by tourism, offering comfortable, good quality places to stay. Almost all our rooms have private bathrooms (in some cases a family booking requiring two rooms may be asked if a single bathroom would be acceptable). We stay in delightful bed & breakfast accommodation, in local village houses, farms, small hotels and even cave houses! As our properties are unique, the levels of service available vary from one to the next. Wherever you stay however, a delicious daily breakfast will be supplied, and your accommodation will be serviced (bed made, room cleaned) regularly. Town based Escapes stay in small family-run hotels, B&B’s and apartments, in comfortable rooms with private bathrooms. The owners of all our properties are as enthusiastic about their community and mountains as we are, and are dedicated to ensuring that you enjoy your stay and feel really “at home”, so that you come to love the area as much as they do!
