Stay in the pretty town of Kobarid (formerly Caporetto), famous as the scene of the Austro-Hungarian breakthrough during WW1, but now a sleepy place close to the turquoise Soča River. The town has a quiet charm, a fascinating award-winning museum and a very attractive church. There are several food shops where you can also find local honey, cheeses and other produce, bars and restaurants, two banks, a chemist and a post office, a newsagent and even a shop selling walking kit. A range of exciting watersports can be arranged locally as well as fishing, horse-riding, caving, climbing and paragliding.
Kobarid will be your base if you choose an Original Car-Free Escape, whilst if you book any other Escape you may choose to stay either in Kobarid or in the pretty rural hamlet of Koseč.
The charming little hamlet of Koseč is a collection of traditional Slovenian houses and farm buildings, nestled into a fold of rolling meadowland beneath the southern slopes of Mt Krn, on the edge of the Triglav National Park. The mountain, at 2244m, with its neighbouring ridge of peaks, forms a vast amphitheatre dominating the skyline above the village. The plateau is dotted with little vegetable gardens, all immaculately tended, orchards, traditional hayricks, and tiny white chapels, whilst the houses are adorned with exuberant and colourful hanging baskets. The views across the fields to the famous Soča valley below are breathtaking. Just down the road is Koseč’s larger neighbour, Drežnica, where the tightly packed collection of pretty houses surround a large church, whose tall steeple soars skywards, emulating the peak of Mount Krn behind. There are only about 75 villagers in Koseč, but with the other four villages of the Drežnica plateau they form a very strong little community, supporting a school, a village shop, a good restaurant, a small museum, and several music and arts societies.
