Eating & Drinking

Picnic Lunches

On an Original or Original Car-Free Escape, your Upland Manager will provide you with a healthy, varied and nutritionally balanced deli-style packed-lunch, freshly made every day. A wide selection of locally produced and often organic fruits and vegetables, meats and cheeses, bread, grains and pulses will be used, giving you the opportunity to really savour the flavours of the Majella. Try salami infused with fennel seeds, fresh pecorino cheeses, delicious salads of pasta with seasonal vegetables, fresh fruit and home-baked cakes.

If you have chosen a No-Frills Hosted Escape, you will find a wide choice of delicious picnic ingredients available in Caramanico’s shops – fresh fruit and vegetables, and locally produced meats, cheeses and bread, much of which can also be bought from the mobile suppliers who regularly visit Decontra laden with local produce.

Evening Meals

"Il Cervo" in Decontra will offer you a mouth-watering variety of local delicacies, and you may also get a chance to join a sumptuous home-cooked feast prepared by Marisa Sanelli at the Agriturismo Pietrantica. There is a choice of other restaurants and pizzerie in Caramanico and nearby villages, including “Il Carro” in Abbateggio which serves up a superb blend of Abruzzan and Sardinian cuisine, and the Locanda del Barone in San Vittorino which prepares delicious local dishes and excellent pizzas.

The regional cuisine includes delicious game: boar and venison antipasti and pasta dishes, arrosticini (tiny cubes of lamb on skewers), and a colourful medley of fresh vegetables, beans and pulses. Bread is made from local grain, and the fresh pecorino sheep's cheese comes from the flocks you will encounter on your walks. The red Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wine is robust and highly drinkable, and Italians come from far and wide to replenish their drinking water supplies from the Decontra village fountains.
