Picnic Lunches
On an Original or Original Car-Free Escape, your Upland Manager will provide you with a healthy, varied and nutritionally balanced deli-style packed-lunch, freshly made every day. A wide selection of locally produced and often organic fruits and vegetables, meats and cheeses, bread, grains and pulses will be used, giving you the opportunity to really savour the flavours of the Carinthian Alps.  Try smoked cheese and lots of different sausages, tasty cured ham, delicious salads of seasonal vegetables, fresh fruit and home-baked pastries.

If you have chosen a No-Frills Hosted Escape, you will find a wide choice of delicious picnic ingredients available to buy in Kötschach-Mauthen’s shops.

Evening Meals

At the Gasthof, Monica takes advantage of her hunting men-folk to serve venison and boar, alongside the Austrian classic Wienerschnitzel and local dish Carinthian kasnudeln, which are pasta parcels enclosing a variety of fillings (smoked meat, cheese or potatoes and mint…). There are other hostelries a few minutes away, including a wide range (from pizza to real fine-dining at Sissy Sonnleitner’s wonderful restaurant) down in Kötschach-Mauthen. Generally the Austrian approach to food is perhaps best described as hearty, but there are always varied salads available to complement - or as an alternative to - sumptuous mixed grills and delicious sausages. Three course meals tend to start with a soup or a platter of local cheeses and cured meats. If you have the stamina for pudding, Carinthia’s fruit trees have been plundered to create a range of tarts and strudeln. This is not an area known for its vine growing, but some pleasant wines are produced in the lower valleys in the east of the region. The beer, of course, is excellent; especially the unfiltered, unpasteurised zwickl.
