Solo Travellers

SOLO TRAVELLERS

Solo travellers are very welcome on our Upland Escapes. In order to take full advantage of the range of self-guided walks on offer, you will need to feel confident walking alone. In addition, you may wish to join our Upland Manager and other guests on 3 organised walks per week. The per person prices for solo travellers are displayed below and include your own hire car and your own en-suite bedroom (double where possible*) as well as all the other standard inclusions listed in the Brochure. Alternatively, if you enjoy walking in the company of others, you may prefer to join one of our new Group Departures.

WHY SOLO TRAVELLER PRICES ARE HIGHER AND WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT

Companions 2 Travel websiteOur prices for solo travellers are slightly higher than the prices based on sharing a double/twin room, as you receive a bedroom and hire car all to yourself. However, if you would like to avoid some or all of the extra costs that come with travelling alone, we can suggest a possible solution:

Companions2Travel.co.uk is a very clever website which enables its members to find like-minded people with whom to travel, enabling them to avoid single supplements and ensuring their holiday budget goes further. Please click on their logo to go straight through to their website.

If you wish to travel with a companion, we can still arrange separate rooms if you wish. You would simply pay the regular advertised twin-share price, plus the minimal single-room supplements outlined below or if staying around Artenara in Gran Canaria you would pay the relevant price according to the number of people occupying your cave-house:

Majella
Mercantour
Couserans
Julian Alps
Gran Canaria
£10 per night
£8 per night
£10 per night
£15 per night

In Tejeda - £11 per night.

Around Artenara, simply refer to the 2, 3 4 or 5 pax per cave-house prices.

In order to help you decide whether you would prefer to experience an Upland Escape as a solo traveller or with a companion, we have outlined the differences (other than monetary) below:

Solo Traveller With a companion
  • Receive a hire car all to yourself
  • Enjoy the privacy of your own room and private bathroom
  • Walk independently, at your own pace
  • Dine in your own company
  • Share the driving and navigation with another
  • Have a room of your own, share your room with another, or take a room each and simply share a bathroom.
  • Choose each day to walk alone or with your companion
  • Dine in the company of another

Walking Alone

We know that walking alone can be a marvellous, inspiring experience. However, by its very nature walking solo carries more risk as an activity than walking with others. Upland Escapes advises a number of very simple measures to reduce that risk:
  • Always let the Upland Manager know where you are going and stick to your plan.
  • Always carry a fully-charged mobile phone in case of emergencies and the Upland Manager's phone number.
  • Always set off well-equipped. Your equipment, when walking alone, should include:
    • A good whistle for attracting attention
    • A first aid kit
    • Plenty of potable water
    • Plenty of layers of clothing, including enough warm clothes
    • Maps, walking instructions and a compass
    • A torch with enough batteries
    • Waterproofs
    • Spare bootlaces
  • You should let the Upland Manager know that you have returned safely each evening.
